The Dawgs fought hard on Saturday, February 2nd to score a season best 376.8 against Stanford 418.35, Cal Berkeley 398.80, and ASU 395.90. There were more hit routines by the Dawgs this time around, but still with much more room to improve. Junior and Co-captain Ben Bloom suffered a moderate concussion from his Rings dismount at the Windy City and is still recovering, so he wasn’t able to compete this week. He is doing better each day and will be ready to compete come the end of February at the Sun Devil Classic. Junior Conner Petellin also missed this competition due to illness.
Vault was their first event, 6 hits in a row scoring a 66.85. Senior Jacob Jarrett lead the pack with a 13.90, with Senior Michael Sibley 13.75, Freshman Jared Danek 13.15, Sophomore Kody Dominguez 13.10, and Sophomore Alex May 12.95 contributing to the team score.
The Dawgs scored a 63.45 on Parallel Bars, tying their score from Windy City. There were only two hit routines out of six however. The potential on this event has yet to be seen where the score could easily improve by over two points if they all hit. Senior Nathan Tsuji lead the Huskies with a beautiful set, scoring a 13.4, Junior Daniel Gordon also hit with a 12.9. Jarrett and Sibley 12.7, and May 11.75 also helped the team score.
High Bar wasn’t the Huskies best showing (missing Bloom and Petellin was a huge loss), but still showed slight improvement from the last competition scoring a 58.60. Freshman Oscar Hemmert nailed his routine, only incurring .9 in deductions scoring a 12.5. Tsuji 11.95, Gordon 11.75, Sophomore Alex Forcos 11.25, and Sibley 11.15 all contributed to the team score.
The Dawgs really shined on Floor scoring a record high 67.25. Tsuji stuck all of his landings and the dismount with his highest floor score ever 14.6. Jarrett hit the best floor routine I’ve ever seen scoring a 13.45. May 13.3, Gordon 13.15, and Freshman Perry Lightfoot 12.75 contributed with their hit routines. Lightfoot just had his wrist cast taken off last Wednesday after recovering from two broken metacarpals. This amazing showing on the Floor really showed what the Dawgs are capable of.
The Huskies have been working so hard on pommels, and while there weren’t as many falls as the last competition, there were still uncharacteristic mistakes made that kept the Dawgs from scoring better. They scored a 56.35 total with Tsuji leading the pack 12.9, with Sibley 11.1, Senior Ben Fisher 11.05, Gordon 10.9, and Jarrett 10.4 helping the team.
Finishing strong on the Rings, the Dawgs hit 5/6 scoring a 64.30. Jarrett hit a very clean routine scoring a 13.1. Tsuji was also clean 12.95, Gordon showed off his amazing positions and strength 12.9, and Sibley and May both hit for a 12.7.
The Dawgs now have three weeks to prepare for the Sun Devil Classic. They’ll be training hard to increase their hit percentage and execution scores. GO DAWGS!!!
