WA Open Review

The Huskies got their season started last Saturday Jan 5th against their rivals, Arizona State, and NorCal United. The team results are as follows: ASU, 1st place with a 380.05, Washington 2nd with a 376.3, and while NorCal didn’t field a full team for this competition, they had all arounder Will Ryan who scored a 73.3 (4th place).

The 376.3 team score is 6.3 points higher than last year’s average team score! This accomplishment shows just how hard the Huskies have been working. They have never been more ready at this time of the season and it showed!

The Dawgs placed first as a team on the floor exercise with a 64.15. Team Captain Nathan Tsuji lead the Huskies on floor with a 13.25, with Ben Bloom 12.95, Jacob Jarrett 12.95, Alex May 12.5 and Kody Dominguez 12.5 helping the team score.

While pommel horse is one of the Dawgs weaker events, they started off with a team score of 60.25, five points higher than last year’s average! Senior Jacob Jarrett lead the Huskies with a 12.75 with Conner Petellin 12.3, Daniel Gordon 12.1, Tsuji 11.9, and Jared Danek 11.2 all contributing to the team score. There were three falls counted in these routines so there is even more room for improvement this year.

Rings is stronger this year for the Dawgs although their score didn’t reflect it in this competition. There were mistakes made in a couple of key routines, and one of our best ring guys, Senior Michael Sibley, has yet to make line up due to some nagging injuries. Jarrett lead the pack with a 12.85, with Bloom 12.6, Gordon 12.4, Danek 12.0, and Oscar Hemmert 11.95 all helping the team score.

The Huskies placed 1st on Vault as a team with a strong 67.8 (a point higher than last year’s ave). Jarrett lead the Dawgs with a 13.8, with Dominguez 13.7, Ben Fisher 13.7, Hemmert 13.3, and Danek 13.3 all contributing to the team score. The Dawgs look to greatly improve this score by adding difficulty to two or three of these vaults within the next few weeks.

The Dawgs did a great job on the parallel bars with 5 out of 6 hit routines, scoring a 62.8. Tsuji hit a huge set, leading the Huskies and winning the meet with a 13.4, with Bloom 12.45, Gordon 12.45, May 12.25, and Petellin 12.25 helping the team score.

High bar was the Huskies final event and one of the most exciting! These Dawgs are adding more high-flying releases to their routines, raising the difficulty of their routines. Hemmert and Tsuji lead the pack, both scoring a 12.1, with Petellin 11.9, Sibley 11.75, and Gordon 11.65 all helping the team score. The team looks to add Bloom and May into these counting routines as they have some of the highest flying releases on the team!

Congratulations to these hard working athletes for a great start to the 2019 season! The Huskies now look to prepare for their next competition in Chicago on Jan 19th. GO DAWGS!
